soon to be a new tt owner but i need a little advice before

Posted by ernesto lafuente at January 14. 2009

ok. here is the little problem. i live in virginia ...... and the car is in chicago illinois ...... is a 02 audi tt  it looks beautiful !!!!! but then again i know about the issues with time belt and even though the mileage is 75 k and the price is a good deal only 10k.  i will probably have to change the time belt. but this was my plane i was planning to call the nearest audi dealer and have it check the car and also include the check to the timing belt and have them give me a feedback on the car and if they said it was ok (  i know they will say time belt should be change lol ) but if everything else was ok. i was just going to pick up the car in one trip instead of multiples trips ..... is this a good idea?  sorry for the long msg.... but i need advice on this purchase..... :)

here is the link for the car any other helpful comments are welcome.

gracias

Looks pretty nice on the outside.  75k is a little high mileage, so I'd be serious about having the mechanic check it over.  If you get there, and it looks as good in person and checks out okay, I think it's a reasonable deal.  It looks like there are a few superficial issues with the steering wheel (dirty, worn) and the driver's seat (upholstery worn, seat sags a bit)

Other than the timing belt, issues with mkI TT's tend to be electrical - tail lights, brake lights with faulty switches, instrument cluster failure, gas gauge iffy, windows failing to close. Ask if they have service records for any of those issues. And be SURE to get the safe code for the radio - it is a real nuisance if you don't have that.  Having the manuals for the car can also be an issue - they're harder to find than you might think.

One caveat - if you are planning on driving it back to VA from IL, I'd go ahead and have the timing belt changed before you make the trip.  At this mileage it's right on the verge, begging to be changed, and that long a haul might well see it fail.  That really wouldn't be fun...

thank you for the feedback. i will probably call audi and give them the vin number and have them give me information about the car if they had any issues with lights or windows. i will probably have the timebelt change like you said but here is the issue if i take it to audi ..... they charge a lot. how do i find a mechanic that works on audi that can do the job cheaper and also do you know how long does it take to change the belt ?

I bought my car at this dealer because I am in Chicago, my recommendation is dont buy from them, their cars have too way many miles and their reputation is not that good, if you buy from them buy the extended warranty please learn from my lesson. My car has been at the shop for over 25 times and spent over 9000 dollars, two things you need to do:

1-Make sure they will take care of mechanical issues before you leave the location and have them give you a history for this car A MUST.

2-Buy a japanese or American car, if you have a lots of $$$$$$ you are welcome to become part of the elite of people who are WAISTING time and money.

This a nice car but was not fabricated properly.

Good luck.

The timing belt change out took the better part of a day, for mine; it's a busy dealership.  I'd only take it to a non-dealer shop if I had a very good recommendation from someone local with experience with TTs.

Re the advice of Cayala - sounds like a valid warning - there are lemon TTs out there, and you don't want to get one.  A solid TT is a lot of fun, a lemon TT is a pain in the pocketbook, etc.
