License plate bulb replacementPosted by kevanwi at February 12. 2008
Does anyone know the procedure for replacement of a failed rear license plate bulb ?
I can see a black plastic bezel around each lamp but I do not see any screws to remove. Does the bezel need to come off or does the lamp holder just pop out ?

Since you seem to be a do it yourself type, I suggest you buy a Bentley Manual for your TT. They cost around $100 USD, but are well worth it. Everything you have asked about is described in detail. - Dave

I need to remove the bulb holder and I dont have a spare $100 for a Bentley manual.
I have been trying and its very easy to damage the bezel, gasket, and surrounding metal / paint with too much levering.
There must be some technique involved because the thing wont just spring off. Or maybe a special tool is required ..........

OK, the first one's free! The manual says switch off the lights and disconnect the battery. Then "Open trunk lid. Press and slide license plate light outward and remove". The photo shows that there is a clip on the side of the light away from the center, and a notch that fits the body on the side towards the center. So what you are doing is pushing the light holder towards the side of the car far enough to compress the clip and get the notch past the metal, then the inner edge of the light hold should lift out. To install, just put the notched end in first and the press the outer edge until the clip snaps into place.
Seriously, buy the manual, ask for it for Christmas or your birthday, whatever, just get it!
