'08 TT vs. '08 R32

Posted by Steven Sander at August 13. 2008

Hello, first off, I'm not quite an Audi TT owner, but will be in the market for 1 in the near future.

In my search for a new vehicle, the VW R32 had my attention. I drove a friend's GTI on a few occasions and was impressed, but seeing the GTI with a 3.2L V6 and AWD with the DSG sounded incredible... Only problem, the car is pretty ugly :/

It was then that I realized the R32 was borrowing some technology from the TT. Looking into the new TT, the car just sounds absolutely amazing. Which brings up my question, how does the TT and R32 compare in performance?

Thank you very much for any input

WHile I haven't driven the R32, I have driven the DSG equipped GTI and both the Mk 1 TT DSG, as well as the 08 TT... tho the DSG version was not available at the time.

I can tell you that the GTI and the mk1 tts were on the same chassis, and with the DSG shared the same motor and transmission. I was told the Engine on the S-line TT was chipped differently, to enhance performance considerably in the sport mode.

Between the GTI and the TT mk1... both had similar power, but the TT had a much lower center of gravity, and the S-line car had much stiffer anti-roll bars...
overall the TT had noticeably less body roll in tight cornering at speed.

Both of them were a blast to drive...but the TT simply felt a lot more solid on the pavement.

The biggest issue for me between them would have been whether I needed the extra passenger/load space offered by the GTI.

Another consideration is that I was driving the TT coupe. I found the S-line coupe to be a much stiffer body than the GTI... and with the S-line enhancements... it simply pushed the TT solidly into the sportscar realm in terms of handling. Superior to the boxster, and on a par with the Z3/ Z4

The main difference between the mk1 TT and the mk2 TTs ( 08 and later) is that the new TTs have an entirely new unibody chassis that is a mixture of aluminum and steel. The steel parts are pretty well confined to the rear third of the car. This was done exclusively to offset the weight of the front mounted engine and give the car a much better weight distribution than the Mk1 TTs

Because of this, The New TTs feel a little more poised when compared to similarly powered mk 1 TTs. They are lighter on their feet, and no longer feel a little front heavy.

I have noticed a significant difference between the handling and performance of even the large engined TT and the S- badged TT. Audi engineers pull out the stops for the S cars and really tune them for optimal performance.
