Time & Date Display reset itself
Up to Audi TT Forum
My time & date display just reset itself to July 1, 1998. They didn't find any particular reason for this during a recent 60K service. How would an '01 even know about 1998? The reset actually seems to happen during cold weather and the battery is fine. Anyone else experienced this?
Going back in time,
Ken
My 2001 TT has done 64K miles. The time started resetting each time the car was left in cold weather. It always went back to the same time; don't recall if it was 1998. Also, the trip odometer would reset to zero.
There was no problem when the car was at home in the garage at night.
I got the battery replaced about a month ago, and haven't observed the resetting problem since.
The dealer suggested if the new battery didn't do the job, we need to do $800+ work to replace the 'panel'. I am glad it didn't get to that. Would hate to spend $800 to fix a clock!
While we are on this subject, I want to mention that the panel was already replaced once, before warranty expired. At that time, if the car was outside the garage on cold mornings, all the needles - odometer, tachometer, fuel & temp gauges would be stuck at zero. Car would run fine, just couldn't tell how much gas was in the tank and how fast I was going. Everything was ok after the said panel was replaced.

I bought a used 2001 TT quattro in august 2006. The guy who owned it was anal about keeping it serviced and clean. It had 40k miles after 6 years. He never drove it in the wet. It was immaculate.
Last February 2007, I took it in to Audi in SanJose CA because the instrument cluster failed. The speedo was stuck at zero or waving violently between 30-60mph. The fuel guage was always full. The tacho revved 360degrees around the dial - it was comical - untill I took it in to AUDI that is!!! After much too-ing and fro-ing, the whole cluster was replaced under the extended warranty I took out on the car. Not I hasten to add by Audi USA.
Then fast forward to this January 2008, same thing again. I took it in and even though it was under the AUDI USA 12 months/12,000 miles service warranty, they claimed it under the extended warranty again ??!!
Bizzarre. I have done some extensive research on this on the internet. AUDI UK did a FREE recall on 2001-2003 instrument clusters. AUDI USA do not recognise this as an issue. There is a California class action being taken against AUDI USA. Also, if you have no luck getting it fixed free, then I recommend this post :-

All in all, very frustrating since apart from the electrics, my TT rocks!
Battery time! My '01 did the same thing twice in the last six weeks, even reset to that same date. Last week I noticed the date was wrong again & this time she didn't have the juice to start, just went into clickity mode. Quick trip to the battery store & all was right with the world again! My cluster is kind of erratic so I am always leary of it failing but fortunately it was just the battery this time! Good luck!
My 01 TT suffered thru resetting of clock, all instruments failing periodically, heater fan stopping at zero degrees, no instrument panel lights on occasion, battery replacements, dead battery if not started after 2 days. I bought a jump start battery and put it in the spacious trunk when I had to take a trip gt 2 days in fear of a dead battery on return. Eventually, it was either a new car or instrument panel replacement and settled for the latter. NO MORE PROBLEMS!! Just $1000 lighter. I spoke with Audi (who claimed ignorance on the matter) and sent letter to Audi and DOT stating that it was a hazard not knowing how fast your were going or how much gas one had, responses were OH HUM. Since there are a relative small numbers of '01s made and most people whimped out after dealing with dealers, DOT has few complaints.
Any way I love it although at 68 the seat is getting too hard for my bun.
