Not sure if my car is over heating?

I have a 2002 audi ttq with 87k on it. Its been cold lately where I live, but in the last two times Ive driven my car the temperature gauge needle has gone almost to the "H". I'm driving the car moderately and not redlining it. I just turn on the heat to let any excess heat out, and the gauge goes back to normal. Then when I drive again the needle goes up. The car feels fine and is performing fine..theres not smoke or steam coming out the front hood.....Is there a way to tell if its just the instrument cluster or if its really over heating?
