CV Boot removal on TT

Posted by Kevin Kemble at May 23. 2009
I had a hard time finding a specific article describing the removal of a 2001 225 Quattro outer CV boot so I thought I would just give a quick blurb on how I did it. Put the axle in a vice (wrapped in something protective) and then use a dead-blow or rubber mallet to drive the joint off the axle. It has to be popped over the retainer c-clip. Good luck....had a worse time with this than doing the timing belt job...LOL

I'll be doing this in the next few weeks. As far as I know now, I've only got to do the boots and not the joints or shafts. A few questions for you if you would be so kind.

I need to use the vice to hold the axle in place so that the joint will seperate? That is to clean it out and repack it with greese right? Where do I hit with the dead-blow? Do I do this in reverse to get it back in? Any other tips?

I'm thinking of doing the bearings while I'm at it. Should be easy to do since I have it torn down right?

Looks as if I can get the whole axle assembly for just over the cost of the inner and outer boots.

I think this is what I will do rather than go through the pain of pulling the boot just to find out the joint needs to be replaced. Any tips? I found this guide and I think it's about the same but it's for an A8.
