Resenator cut off??

Ok so ive only had my tt for about a year and have been reading around about different exhausts and stumbbled across deleting the resenator. My question is and may be a dumb one but if you delete the resenator what are the downfalls and wont that throw up a check engine light? Any help will be appreciaterd
