How bad is TT reliability really?

If you look thru various TT sites, you will see a steady falloff in complaints with each successive year they made the Mk 1.
Just figure you want the most recent one you can afford.
I would say a 2004 with more mileage is probably a better bet than a 2002 with less, if the cost is similar and the 2004 has had its belt replaced.

I'm in the market for a winter car. Reading on this forum (http://www.audittcca.com/discussions/auditt/00008386/conversation_view?b_start:int=0&-C=) and elsewhere, the TT looks like a maintenance nightmare. It even makes my Ferrari sound reliable. Other groups that rate reliability give the TT average reliability results.
What should I expect maintenance wise if I purchase a first generation TT?
To provide some background, I do all my own car work, and have other cars to drive if necessary. I'm willing to tolerate some misbehavior in order to drive a work of art, but there is a point where I get fed up (aka Jaguar).
I own a 2003 TT 225hp with 51K miles. So far, no real issues. A headlight unit was replaced under warranty and a brake light switch needed to be replaced ($60). I do all my own oil changes, brake fluid change, Hadex filter change and spark plugs. Coils are going to be replaced under extended warranty by Audi at no cost to me (although they are working fine).
Great car in the snow and good gas mileage. I expected to have a lot of problems with the car from what I've read on various forums (and I could still) but so far, the car has been very reliable.
