Engine overheat symbol about 3 seconds after the car starts.

Posted by Andrew at January 26. 2010
Recently my 2001 Audi TT quattro has been giving me this unusual series of problems.

Right when the car starts, within three seconds or so, the LCD screen on the dash beeps and displays the engine overheating symbol, this happens one or two times and never continues after the car gets to normal temperature. After about 10 minutes of driving the engine temp starts bouncing between the middle and 2 notches hot. The car has 120k on it, and the previous owner claims to have replaced the pump and thermostat at 90k.

I'm not sure where to go to start with diagnosing this problem. Any ideas as to what it could be would be appreciated.

Hi there,

Did you ever get a resolution to this issue?

We are having something similar happen to a 2001 TT. The LCD screen doesn't flash immediately, but it will after about5-10 minutes. The engine temperature checks out normally at the shop, but we still get the thermostat error light and the engine temp gauge goes to hot.

Thanks,
Alec
