How much to pay for a project car?

Posted by Doug Harper at July 01. 2009
I'm considering the opportunity to buy am '01 TTC Quattro 180 which has a suspect motor. The seller describes a lower engine knock. Assuming major engine damage I look at this as having potential for a souped-up engine rebuild. I'm not sure I'd want to invest in a K04 in addition to the broken/worn parts, purely because of the expense. However, I've looked around the internet enough to see that a 180 engine can be modified without messing with the boost levels but by up-speccing the engine internals. So here's the big question: assuming final value of around $10,000 what kind of costs should I expect for a pretty thorough overhaul? I'm not looking for guesses on costs for an undiagnosed fault. I just want an idea of how much it'd cost to do a standard soup-to-nuts overhaul. Thanks!

For just engine internals? Probably $3k+ Check CTSTurbo, Integrated Engineering.

Though I do have a recommendation (just my $0.02): If you're going to put this kind of money and effort into building your engine into a powerhaus, I wouldn't waste the time, effort or money, upgrading to a K04 on a 180. Check out the kits from CTSTurbo.com they have kits that include everything from a big turbo (gt3071r and LARGER!!) with internals, FMIC, injectors, tune, etc. All for a very reasonable price. They have kits for probably around $6k with internals included that will make 550+hp. Again, just my $0.02, a K04 is not worthy of a total build.

Best of luck though, I'd love to do a full project car some day!!
