Timing Belt and Service -> $2500 - Fair Price?
Up to Audi TT Forum
Hi there,
I recently took my belowed black-on-black 225, 2002 TT to the local dealership for an oil change. The check engine light had been on earlier, but this light disappeared before I got the car in the shop.
I currently have 46,000 miles on the car and after changing the oil, the dealership let me know I am scheduled for a full service and to replace the timing belt - all for the very affordable price of $2500.
My question to other TT owners:
1) Does this seem like a fair price for parts and labor for this type of work or am I being swindled?
Thought I should get your input before I start negotiating price with the dealer.
Thanks,
Jorgen

Hi Jorgen,
I just bought a 2008 silver coupe, however, previous to my new baby I also had a beloved black-on-black 2001 roadster 225. The dealer should have a record on their computer of all the scheduled services if they were done at an authorized dealership before you bought your baby (hopefully the previous owner kept that up) and Audi tells you what the scheduled maintenence is. I think they recommend replacing the timing belt at a higher mileage, however, my timing belt broke at 38,000 and it needed a new engine, obviously a lot more than $2500. Thank goodness my warranty covered it. That was my experience. If you don't have an established relationship with your dealer and/or service advisor then maybe take it to another if there is one close by and get their opinion. That does seem like a fair price just knowing in general how much Audi repairs run and I am on my seventh Audi. I have paid up to $4,000 for a visit to the dealer (that was my A4) so just some perspective.

Thanks for your response, Carol.
I suppose you can't put a price on love, right?
It's a funny thing, the belt itself is fairly cheap, about $60, and is usually replaced along with the water pump, which is about another $200, but it's the labor charge that gets ya - it's about 3 hours per, each - it's not double to do them both together, but still, they'll probably ding you for at least 4 hrs. Which, depending on the dealership, yup, it can run some bucks. Would it run you 2400? Well, I had my timing belt, new pump, 4 new tires (Continentals), and new cam sensor all replaced at once, and it ran about 3500. So, depending on what else will come with your "full service" in addition to the timing belt, your estimate is maybe a little on the high side.
