Whine like noise when rolling
Up to Audi TT Forum
I have a 2001 Q roadster. When rolling, i hear a noise that kind of sound like a mild fan belt noise. Does that make sense? Deeper than the turbo noise with a slight wobble. I hear it mostly when i'm driving near other objects so that the sound is bounced back at me. Touching the brake does not affect the sound. It only does it while rolling. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
Only does its while rolling?
A belt should be running if the engine is... if it only makes the sound while rolling my first suspects would be tires, brakes, drive shafts or CV joints. Those are the things that stop turning when the car stops moving.

I don't think it's the tires. It's possible it could be the brakes, However i would think that applying the brakes would stop or at least change the sound. How would i be able to check if it is either the drive shafts or CV joints? I think i'll jack up the car and spin the wheels to see if i hear anything. Heck, Maybe that's just the way these cars sound. Car has 36 thousand miles.
I have noticed this on my 2004 TT as well. Most notably when going slower (in a parking lot, for instance) Once I touch the accelerator, it goes away, is this the same issue you have, Bubbastain?
I can almost assure you guys it's the tires. That TT is more by sensitive to tire wear then any car I've ever owned. Mine was making almost a howling noise when going 15-30 mph. You'd have thought the rear wheel bearings were shot. I put on a new set of continentals and it was like a new car! amazing difference. As an added bonus, my glove box door that would fly open going over every railroad grade crossing has stayed shut ever since.
