3.2 DSG "Shudder"
Up to Audi TT Forum
Sorry you're having trouble with your new (to you) TT. I've been driving a friends 04 TT VR6 Quattro Coupe (40K miles) for a week now. (He'd like me to buy it). Which I'm going to, the car is brillant. I've had a number of other sports cars in the past, BMW, Mercedes, Corvette, etc. The DSG transmission has taken me a bit to get used to, it is clearly a manual transmission with some very impressive electronics and other gizmos attached. However, at low speed it seems to have trouble deciding what you want to do. When being careful driving around the neighborhood (don't want to run over the kiddies). It does indeed up shift to fast, the engine bogs down and then it gets a bit cobby. So what I've been doing is (this may be counter intuative) putting it in Sport mode. It holds the shift and at low speed runs much better. If neccessary I pull it up one gear with the paddle. Once out of the low speed areas I shift it to Drive and good to go. Here in Dallas my major objection to having a sports cars is driving in traffic. Being a purist I'd prefer to shift myself, except when the traffics bad and then you wear yourself out pretty quick. The TT shifts faster and smoother than I could ever do myself and I get the added benifit of not having to do it in traffic. In addition, I drove a Cayman and this car is faster and the transmission works much better than the Tiptronic in the Porsche. I could never get the hang of the buttons on the steering wheel, the paddles on the TT are much easier to use.
Good luck with your problems I'm sure Audi will figure it out.

Hello,
What I have read and experienced to the contrary - is that the DSG has problems in 1st gear, especially when starting from a stop. To me, the 1st gear has a lag and does not engage fast enough. To compensate for this, my procedure is to take my foot off of the brake and let the car find the gear itself and then I hit the accelerator. At this point the car has normal acceleration and there is no lag or problems shifting to 2nd. I have read about this problem in rags like MotorTrend and Car/Driver. Other than that, I enjoy the DSG and almost never use the "automatic" mode.
Regards,
Hello everyone,
I recently purchased a certified 2005 3.2 TT DSG with only 18k miles. Ive had the car for about 3 weeks now and have had some problems.
First week the Check Engine light came on. Trip to the dealer revealed a knock sensor issue and an evap system code. The dealer replaced a sensor and cleared the evap code. XD
Second week light back on and Ive begun to realize an issue the car has had since day one, a shudder in power delivery when manouvering at parking lot speeds. It seems to be noticeable when making a slow standing start(especially on an incline), it lasts about 1-3 seconds until the DSG completely engages.
What is somewhat disturbing to me is that both times the engine light has come on the car was being maneuvered at low speed while exhibiting this shuddering.
I have looked around a bit online and have found one instance of GTI owners discussing a similar DSG shuddering effect to no avail.
Am I the only one that experienced this problem? I can't seem to find any information online that may help in my upcoming dealer "battle" over correcting this issue.
I have ready many articles that mention the cars smooth clutch engagement at low speeds.
Sincererely,
H
I find the 3.2 has some hesitation problems whenever the engine is cold. This happen in all gears, and disappears once the engine is warm.
But after playing around with the low speed shudder for months now... I think I have it figured out.
Unless you floor the accelerator... the DSG seems to be trying to figure out when to shift into second.
The throttle is by wire... and so pedal position itself is not the defining parameter for how the car accelerates.
It seems to me that the computer is trying to figure out what you are doing from how you are pressing the pedal.
What I find is that at moderate to low throttle the DSG is shifting from 1st into 2nd and back into 1st. Then into second.
Because this can be happening at any moment... and can be happening almost every other second...you have a high likelihood of hitting the gas while it is in midshift.
I have also found that as you slow down from reasonable speed... the DSG will downshift automatically even in manual mode... but that it does not shift into first until the car is practically at a stop... As most of us kind of roll thru a stop, this results in me hitting the gas with the car practically stopped, but the gearbox in 2nd... which creates considerable lag.
This will happen even in manual mode as the DSG will overide the paddle shifters if engine speed drops low enough to threaten a stall.
So I think the issue is not mechanical as much as the software that tries to interpret what you are going to be doing next...
If the computer thinks you are slowing down, it will pre-select the next lower gear... if instead you floor it...it has to alter that selection and that is gonna feel like a lag.
If this is happening at slow speeds... the computer might shift up expecting you to accelerate... and when you don't, you find yourself in too high a gear and the engine laboring...
So I think most of the shuddering issues mentioned come down to shift schedule grey areas....with indeterminate driving.
The proof is in that manual shifting at parking lot speeds seems to eliminate all hesitation... except when I get the car going so slow that it starts to shift on its own into 1st to prevent stall.
Also... you will note that a more forceful foot on the throttle will also tend to minimize hesitation... When you drive in a way the program is design to anticipate... such as smooth acceleration or deceleration, the DSG performs flawlessly.
And finally... the most telling is that in Sport mode, where the DSG is biased to maintain high engine revs... the hesitation issue disappears
By delaying shifting and staying in 1st much longer...
I think the issue is that even the DSG's manual mode is not ENTIRELY manual... it is still managing the gearbox for you.... protectively upshifting or downshifting on its own.
ON the one hand I find the occasional lag frustrating... on the other I value that I am not gonna be able to blow the engine... or stall out in an intersection, due to some minor lapse in attention. I love that I can take over at will, or let the DSG handle the gearbox on its own...
And I especially love the sport mode... where it out shifts me 95% of the time.
All in all... still the best transmission I have driven.
That might be the case with the older DSG's, but I have an 08 Roadster with DSG and the launch control works perfectly straight from the factory.
The Launch Control feature is disabled in US models.... or has that changed for the 08?
In S mode the thing accelerates like a rocket... The complaints here are power inconsistency at very low speeds. Like in a parking lot.
Have you noticed any kind of occasional lag in throttle response at low speed?
