Weirdest problem on my TT

Posted by sunburn731 at April 14. 2008

I have a 2002 TTQ about 71k on it. I was driving to go eat, and after I parked the car, turn the ignition off to get out I noticed my radio was still on. Then I realized my engine was also on too! So i have the keys in my hands out of the ignition and my engine is still running. (it wasnt the turbo timer still running..) I could put the car into gear and still drive with out the key in it. I managed to shut the engine off by opening the door and closing it. Anyone ever have this happen?  Is this a problem I should fix? After I was done eating I tried it in the parking alot again. Started it up then shut it down..engine was running without the key again. After that hadn't happened again. so only twice..

I am not sure that this is what your particular problem is.... but it sounds very familiar...

Modern computer controlled cars are prey to a host of problems that fall into the category of transient software issues.

This kind of problem could indicates a problem with the computer hardware... but if non-replicable, probably indicates a software instruction error.

These kind of things can be caused by something as silly as military radar or other radio interference which, passing thru the circuitry, can induce currents in the wiring that sometimes happens to be an instruction, or conflicting instructions that can cause a computer to go loopy.

I had a car with a chip controlled rear window washer wiper... everytime I drove it past Camp Pendelton's hovercraft hangar while they were running their hovercraft, the wiper would come on and the washer would pump fluid out continuously... and the only thing that would stop it was to shut off the engine and restart.

Unfortunately , there is absolutely no way to test computers for how radio waves passing thru their circuitry might affect their operation... because of the variety of wavelengths, AND the variety of transmission and encoding schemes that create pulses, occilations of frequency and amplitud...

This is the reason you're not supposed to use your cell phone on a plane.... They are not SURE phones would make their fly by wire computer go loopy... but do you want them to take the chance when your 10,000 feet of the ground and have no time to re-boot?

What's a little scary is that on my TT the throttle is entirely computer controlled, too.

So ,theoretically, it is possible that some computer glitch could cause my throttle to go full on when I am not even touching the gas pedal.
