Hi all, I'm looking for a shift knob adapter for my TT. I am having a custom knob made but we need the screw on metal sleeve to mold the knob over. If any one knows of any place to bye the adapter please let me know. rkennedy@kennedyclan.com

What are you molding it over?

It should be a standard thread size and pitch.

If the knob you are making is metal- just drill a slightly smaller hole and TAP threads into the metal directly using the proper size and pitch tap.

If you are making the shift knob out of wood or some form of plastic, you can use any properly sized insertable threaded nut.
Most any hardware store will sell a selection of insertable machine thread nuts.
For wood they are often called T-nuts.

like these

also called Threaded sleeves or Inserts

screwed in with an allen wrench... so the internal threads are no marred.

These can be cast around if you are talking about casting the knob in a resin...

Christopher, thanks. Good info. I am having it made from resin. I'll have to do a bit more research and get the correct depths ect.. Thanks again. Robert

What you want to do is find a bolt with the same size and pitch threads as the shaft of the shift lever. Make your mold so that this bolt is held centered thru the base of the mold cavity... this may require a fixture or jig that fits over the top of the mold if you are pouring the resin thru the bottom side of the sculpture.

grease the bolt's thread lightly with vaseline, and thread one of the inserts shown above onto the bolt, deep enough to accommodate the actual length of the threaded section of the shift lever.

Fill the mold with resin and set the jig on top that holds the bolt properly aligned to the mold cavity, allowing the resin to set around the bolt.

DO not use polyester resin for this- it will split when you cast a bolt internally.

Your best bet is a Urethane resin... filling the resin with a powder like calcium carbonate to reduce shrinkage significantly, and increase weight is also a good ides.

And another tip- if you don't have a vacuum system, lightly dust the interior surface of the mold with talcum powder... that will help eliminate nearly all air bubbles on the surface of the casting.
