Detailing tonneau cover

I have taken my new 02 TT roadster for a complete inside out detail. The tonneau cover has something scuffed on the surface of the cover (looks like the original owner dropped the cover against something white in color) that the technician doing the detail could not get out. Can someone tell me what the cover is made of? I was going to try a leather cleaner/ conditioner along with some elbow grease and see if that works for me although that is what my professional detail tech. was trying. Has anyone tried a product called goo gone? Can the surface be painted?
