Timing Belt Safety Check Recall
Up to Audi TT Forum
As far as I know that's what has been offered to date. I guess it's better than nothing. $800 bucks to fix or twice that to fix if it breaks. Let us know how it tuns out. I think it's too late for me to get in on this even though the tensioner and belt had been replaced prior to purchase.
Anybody know how big a job it is just to crack it open and have a look? With an issue like this I'd like to see for myself.
Hey Donald...here's the deal with the recall....it's really a warranty extension that only covers your engine if it blows up as a direct result of a faulty timing belt, which any Audi TT 2000-2003 apparently might have. The caveat to the warranty is that you absolutely have to take your car into a licensed Audi dealer and have the timing belt inspected within 1500 miles of your regularly scheduled maintenance or every 40,000 miles...furthermore they suggest having it looked at every time you get an oil change, just to be safe. This does NOT mean that the cost of replacing the belt is covered, that's all on you and $800 sounds just about right to have it done by Audi (which you have to in order to have the warranty remain valid). You absolutely have to have the belt replaced no later than 105,000 miles (vs. the 120,000 for all other years and models)...and in fact, the closer to 65,000-80,000 the better. Some people are even doing it at 40,000 miles, just to be safe. The good news is that if your engine blows up, it's all on Audi so long as you do everything on your end.
Hope that helps...
800 for audi to the change seems way low i was quoted 1,900 by one dealer and 1,800 by another got it done for 1,100 at a private shope good luck
My belt snapped at 93,000 miles, the total on repairs was nearly $6000. For some reason Audi never sent me the "We fouled up" paperwork to submit for the reimbursement and only found out about teh class action lawsuit via this forum.
I've been chasing after a refund for better than six months.
Since the repair, I've moved and now have to drive 200 miles to get a letter from the dealer that did the repair to explain that "Yes, the repairs were indeed necessary because the timing belt failed."
