Did you get a diagnostic code such as 1136?  I just went through a similar situation on my 2001.  Turns out a vacuum hose had failed and was leaking which will cause the same code as a failed MAF as indicated by a lean fuel mixture.  My hose was in an obscure place under the intake manifold.  It was the one that controlled the fuel rail pressure regular that also likely caused fuel issues.  I've read that 90% of MAF or O2 failure codes can be attributed to a leaking or disconnected vacuum line.  So spend a few minutes, take the plastic covers off the engine, and trace the hoses from end to end before you spend big money on parts.  I fixed mine for $2 worth of vacuum hose.
