Odd sound after turned off engine? 2004 225 TT Roadster

Hello, all ... I have long enjoyed reading your posts, NOW after several years of looking, I'm a new TT Roadster owner. Just this week purchased my silver 2004 TT Roadster, 225 quattro and enjoying it VERY much. Was a little concerned during the test drive about the feel of the front end, but read up and attributed the 'feel' to what's termed the Audi TT "Shake and Scuttle", or as one reviewer termed it, it feels like a "hobby-horse" on rough pavement or bumps. EXACTLY how it felt to me. So, I guess that's normal and it certainly drives SMOOTH and flawless on the highway. It looks new, appears to drive as new and at only 9,000 miles just might as well be called new ~ BUT, I've noticed a slight 'whir' or 'whirring' sound AFTER I turn off the engine coming from under the front hood toward the bumper. (I do wait 1 -2 mins before I shut down to let the turbo come down after driving) - Noticed it several times now, it sounds electrical, something small, but whinding, could it be a cooling fan or some such thing or is this ODD and most likely a problem to fix? Much appreciate any response. Glad to be a new TT owner.

Sounds like you are describing the auxiliary fan, it often keeps running a short period after shutoff to cool down critical engine components for longer service life.
It is normal.

Or the coolant after-run pump. Instead of counting only on thermosiphon (Ford Model T water pump), as most water-cooled turbocharged engines do, Audi/VW use a circulation pump to keep cooling down the bearing area of the turbocharger after turning the engine off. And, they fail every so often, but can sometimes be repaired instead of replaced. If you pop the hood and peer in toward the back of the radiator, you can see it there above the fans, a bit on the passenger side.

No doubt it is the after-run coolant pump.  Runs for 10 minutes everytime the ignition is switched off (even if you didn't even start the engine!).

Thanks, Patrick, I've noticed that, even just switching the ignition it does indeed come on~! Thanks everyone for clearing this up for me and giving me one less worry!
