Problems to expect

Posted by adam_reh at June 28. 2007
Hello, I am considering buying a 2001 Audi TT with around 90K miles on it. I am worried that I will bare the bulk of repairs on this car because of the amount of milage, and i'm just writing to find out what kind of problems I can expect with this car and what to look for during a test drive. On average, how many miles would you say these vehicles last without major repairs, and at what milage would you estimate a certain part would need to be replaced.
I tried searching the forums but I could not find a definitive answer.

I appreciate any help you guys could give,
Thanks alot.

The big thing is the timing belt. It is an expensive repair and even more expensive if not repaired. At 90k is should have already been changed but double check. Other than that, check the instrument cluster to be sure that it is working properly, all lines are lit. Those would be the only two major things that can be of concern specifically to a TT. Your common other checks should be done also.

I just bought one with 96K miles in great condition. I had the timing belt and water pump changed out because of the many posts warning that 65K seems tops for the timing belt even though Audi may say 105K. I think my shocks are beat but the service manager says he rarely needs to replace shocks these days. Check the service records on carfax or if owner has receipts. With good mainenance I expect the car to go 200K if not abused. Many posts indicate instrument cluster problems, warning lights going on and weird electrical events like problems with auto windows, trunk button etc - my cluster was repaired under the former owner but not much else is a problem on my car.
