Thinking of buying a used TT

Posted by fdkaplan at May 23. 2007
Hi everyone,

I always lusted for a TT. Now the '01s and 02's are finally within my range.

Is there a checklist of things to be on the lookout for when buying a used TT?

Is there a maintenance schedule that I should use to do my due dilligence?

How many miles are too much?

Would you buy a car that looks pristine yet CarFax reports an accident in 2005?

Is it worth it to pay more for the baseball seats? Are there any other improvements to the car or just the tan leather and stitching?

Thanks a lot! I hope I become a TT owner soon!

I'd get an 02

There were a few bugs in the 01 models. Make sure the timing belt, tensioner, and water pump were changed every 60K miles or 5 years. I would not buy a wrecked TT. There are many other clean title cars to choose from. Baseball seats are only available on the roadster and were only sold on about 5% of all roadsters (my informal estimate). Baseball seats were a seperate option and did not come in any package with additional items. I have not seen any premium charged for baseball seats in a used TT and therefore would not pay a premium. I have owned 2 TT roadsters and would not buy one without baseball seats. I get more comments theses days about the seats than I do about the car.

As with ANY used car purchase, remember that maintenance costs, even just scheduled maintenance costs, will be proportionate to the price of the car when new, not the price you are paying for it now. If the scheduled maintenance is done on time, each time, you are looking at $300-$400 a pop at a dealer, maybe 3/4 of that elsewhere.

I like the '02 as well

I bought an 02(fwd) roadster three weeks ago. Nimbus gray with 31,000 miles. A beauty without a scratch on it. Clean car fax and I bought it from the dealer the car was originally purchased from in 2002. The point? Same as Vegasroadstter. Why buy one that has been wrecked? there are great tt's out there. Keep searching.I searched for six months before this one popped up. I was tempted on a couple of others but they had some problems.

02 was the last year the FWD model was offered with a manual transmission.

One tip if you go for a roadster - check the rear canopy for any signs that the glass is coming away from the canopy.....he says embarassingly having missed it himself. Found a few forums posts on the topic, so much happen now and then.
There is no need to buy an ex-accident car I think, there seemed to be plenty of clean 01's and 02's out there (at least a few months ago when I was looking and using CarFax).
I think quattro vs 2FWD, roadster vs coupe and mileage are the main price setting variables, not sure of how much they add on for baseball finish, but it looks great no matter what! Good luck and enjoy shopping around for your TT.
