Earliest Timing Belt Failure?

If your TT timing belt failed please post your year, model, age of car at failure, and mileage at failure.
The link below reported a 47k mile failure on the exact year and model car I have (I'm currently at 43k). I was going to have it replaced at 50k based on the age of the belt but am now rethinking that. I bought my car "AS IS" just out of manufacturer's warranty and not from an Audi dealer.

The average life of the belt system is 4 years or 60K miles max, whichever is shorter. Also replace the tensioner and water pump.
I have a 2001 TT Roadster and just had the timing belt break at 85k...the bad news was the dealership wanted $4800 to repair because the values got screwed up. They have repaired it, but I'm trying to get some help from Audi Customer Care beings that Audi's manufacturer's recommendations state for the timing belt to be changed at 105K...i can't believe it happened at 47k!!
I just had my 2002 in for service, very low mi. (22,000) but almost 5 years old. They said the timing belt was "frayed" and recommended replacement w/water pump to the tune of $1800 "or else you might be looking at engine repair of $7500 if it breaks". My question is: is timing belt failure dependent on mileage of use, or age of the belt?
