Timing Belt - When to replace
Up to Audi TT Forum
Forgive the response to my own post but I wanted to follow up regarding my timing belt failure. $3,200 bill when all is said and done. Aftermarket warranty company paid for about $2100 and the dealership cut me a break so I ended up out of pocket to the tune of $959.15 not including rental car costs. The list of other problems that they found along the way would be very funny had it not been so costly and time consuming. I actually did start a blog, called "The Four Rings of Hell," on the subject of Audi reliability problems and you can find it at www.evansphere.com/Audi
Please post your experiences as comments. Maybe a little negative publicity will pressure Audi to take some action.

If you are under warranty (CPO), and your TB snaps and screws your engine, it is covered (dont quote me on this). However, it isnt covered to be replaced to prevent this from happening... because it is a 105,000 mile part (which is BS).[/quote]
As I approach 70K on my 2001 TT I called my dealer to ask whether the timing belt is covered under my extended warranty (which expires next year). They said no. The terms of the warranty appear to say the opposite: "What Is Covered... chain/timing belts (if maintenance interval is followed)".
So who's right? Anyone have experience with warranty coverage?
Thanks.

Thanks to everyone for the informative posts. My '01 coupe is going in tomorrow for it's 80k mile service, and I guess I better break down and pay their estimated $1,300 to change the timing belt, water pump, etc. Better than $4,000 for a new engine.
I don't know if this helps anyone but I found out today that if you have an 00 or 01 TT and you are the original owner and your timing belt screws you over before 100k and you have to replace the engine, the audi dealer will replace it since the original recommended belt change was 100k miles
My 2001 180 TT timing belt recently broke at 64,000 miles. The dealer quoted me $6000 for a new engine. I found a place locally to rebuild the old engine for $3000. From this day forward I will change my timing belt every 40,000 miles. Better safe than sorry. This is the most expensive car repair bill I have ever encountered.
