Timing belt ruined my engine
Up to Audi TT Forum
I lost the timing belt this morning, and my 01 180 TT has 47,000 on it.
My mechanic recommended taking this matter up with Audi of North America. He says the car has a very low milage for this to happen. He is pretty sure I will win.
Did anyone try this before? It sounds fair to me.

You need to head over to another website. Go to audi world forums and go to the TT owners forum. Do a search on timing belt failures on Audi engines. There has already been a class action suit against Audi regarding early TB failures on the A-4 cars. It is based in the fact that Audi says factory recommended service interval is to change the belt at "105,000 miles" Almost no belts are lasting that long. Any Audi sevice tech will tell you that most let go between 60 and 80 thousand miles. Belt snapping causes 4000 to 8000 dollars in engine damage. In many cases, the belt tensioner is what actually fails. In any event, it is worth going to the mat. It is a known problem and many of us wish Audi would do the right thing and make this right in the interest of keeping good will among their customers all over the world. Believe me, every customer who has this kind of failure happen will not only never buy another Audi, but they will tell everone they meet for years to come to "buy any car you want but don't buy an Audi!"
You might still be under warranty so I would cjeck with Audi. I have a 2002 that has 48,000 but orginal warranty is good to 50,000.
Good Luck

Unfortunately, the warranty ends when one of the two limits (mileage or years) occurs. Being a 2001 model, the warranty on it already expired. Another post here notes that there is a class action lawsuit against Audi for the same problem.
The mechanic is telling me it could cost up to $4,600 to fix my engine.
